Understanding Culture, Society, and Politics

  1. What are the following historical factors that gave birth to the social sciences in the West?

The history of the social sciences has its origins in the common stock of Western philosophy and has numerous antecedents, but it began most purposefully in the early 19th century with positivist philosophy of science. The origins of the social sciences in the 18th century are represented in Diderot's vast encyclopedia, which includes entries by Rousseau and other forefathers. The approach of social science subfields has become increasingly quantitative. In contrast, the multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary character of scientific research into human behavior and the social and environmental elements that influence it piqued the interest of many natural scientists in various parts of social science methods.

  1. What is the relationship between modernity and social sciences?

Modernity, as a topic in the humanities and social sciences, is both a historical time and an ensemble of specific socio-cultural norms, attitudes, and practices that developed in the aftermath of the Renaissance—in the 17th-century "Age of Reason" and the 18th-century "Enlightenment."

  1. What are the basic goals of sociology, anthropology, and political science?

The study, analysis, and description of humanity's past and present is known as anthropology. An anthropologist's major objective is to understand how humans adapt to diverse environmental situations and how we differ as a species.

Sociology is a social science subject that studies human society and human social activities. According to Samuel Koenig, the ultimate goal of sociology is “to enhance man's adaptability to life by generating objective knowledge about social phenomena that may be utilized to deal effectively with social problems.”

Political science's major objective is to be concerned with the process of growth, industrialization, and change, as well as the influence on government forms and policies.

To summarize the origins and aims of anthropology, sociology, and political science, we may say that each field has its distinct origin, character, and goals, yet they all study people and their environments.

  1. How did the social scientists in the developing countries respond to the colonial character of the social sciences?

The West Indian colonies remained marginalized in British imperial consciousness after the end of slavery, but the great disruptions of the 1930s shocked colonial officials' complacency and raised more public concern about a lack of progress. Simultaneously, there was increasing government acknowledgment of the academic social sciences in devising strategies to promote colonial growth and fight mounting imperial challenges.

  1. Why do we need to develop culturally sensitive social sciences for the nation and our people in the age of globalization?

Social science is a branch of study that focuses on the connections between individuals and society. In that sense, social science cannot be ‘culturally sensitive' in and of itself, but it must take cultural circumstances into consideration while developing, testing, and improving social theory. Similarly, ‘globalization' refers to the shifting set of conditions for human relationships, and it must be considered as well. We need social science for the same reason we need any other science: a clear knowledge of cause and consequence allows us to make better decisions. Whether this is a good or negative thing is totally dependent on the decision being made, not on the science itself.

  1. State the significance of social sciences in political science.

Its furthering human understanding of the forms and nature of political activity, as well as to provide theoretical tools for analyzing politically significant occurrences.
